The Lady Trojans of Charles Henderson High jumped out to a 5-0 first-inning lead over Class 7A Enterprise High Monday at the Troy Sportsplex, but the visiting Wildcats took advantage of miscues and free bases on balls en route to a 19-5 Enterprise win over CHHS.
“We just struggled on the mound,” said first-year head coach Tori Free. “We came in really hot, but then just started to fall behind and walk too many batters. That’s what hurt us, was the walks.
“I think our girls were able to build confidence in the first four innings. We came out on top, and I made the comment that we could not settle for five runs, that five runs was not going to be enough. At some point I think we did settle and that is something we have got to work on.”
The Lady Trojans took the 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Heather Maxwell singled, McKenzie Cain singled, Madison Stewart walked, Dakota Berry singled up the middle, Emily Hughes walked, Gracie Sneed singled, and it was 5-0.
CHHS starting pitcher Stella Gilbreath kept Enterprise off the scoreboard for three innings, but the Wildcats got on the board in the top of the fourth inning for six runs in that frame to take the 6-5 lead.
Enterprise added 13 more runs in the top of the fifth inning against multiple CHHS pitchers for a 19-5 lead, and kept CHHS off the bases in the bottom half of the inning to preserve the win.
The Lady Trojans got four hits on the night, as Maxwell, Cain, Berry and Sneed had one hit apiece.
CHHS is off until this Friday and Saturday when they hit the road for a tournament in Montgomery.
