Early storm risk downgraded; tornado watch in effect

Pike County remains under a tornado watch until 1 p.m. today as a round of severe storms is scheduled to move through the area this morning.

The National Weather Service has reduced Pike County’s risk for damaging weather from enhanced to slight. With a slight risk, there is the potential for damaging winds up to 60 mph, quarter-sized hail and the possibility of a tornado.

“The potential timeline for Pike County is between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.,” said Herb Reeves, Pike County EMA director.

“We are in the process of opening the shelters because of the severe thunderstorms to the west of us.”

However, it is important to note that the NWS has warned there is a possibility of another round of storms later today.

“We will update the forecast later this morning,” Reeves said. “Please stay weather aware.”
