Latest health orders allows youth sports to begin this week

In the latest health order, youth sports have been given the go ahead to begin athletic activities as early as Friday evening, and begin playing games on June 15.

Governor Kay Ivey and State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris discussed the latest health order during a press conference on Thursday afternoon in Montgomery.

Between May 22 at 5 p.m. and June 14 athletic activities are limited to practice that involves conditioning, skill drills and similar activities. No athletic competitions can begin until June 15.

Social distancing will me a must at any athletic event. Players, coaches, officials and spectators shall not congregate within six feet of a person from another household except to the extent necessary, according to the order. Players, coaches, officials and spectators shall refrain from high hives, handshakes, and other physical contact.

Players, coaches and officials must were a mask or other facial coverings that cover his or her nostrils and mouth at all times except when they are participating in the athletic activity.

According to the order, players, coaches and officials shall not share water coolers, drinking stations, water bottles, cups or other drinking devices.

The local baseball and softball season was originally scheduled to begin on March 30, but it was forced to postpone the start.

Officials at Troy Parks and Recreation are currently reviewing guidelines to determine what can or cannot be done for all programs and activities.
