The Alabama high school football season will start on time. The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control approved the AHSAA’s Return to Play ‘Best Practices’ recommended guidelines on Wednesday, reaffirming that fall sports will start on time.
“The purpose of the Return to Play document is to offer AHSAA member schools best practices in order to commence the 2020-21 school year athletic seasons as scheduled and as safely as possible,” AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese said.
The action was taken during the Central Board of Control’s annual meeting in Montgomery.
Fall sports teams have the opportunity to begin fall workouts beginning on July 27. Football teams, for acclimation purposes, will be allowed to practice with helmet and shorts only.
Other fall sports including, volleyball, cross-country and swimming and diving can use the first week as an acclimation period as well as a tryout period.
The first contest for all the fall sports can be on August 20.
The AHSAA has planned for a press conference beginning on 1 p.m. on Thursday. During the press conference Savarese will break down and explain the Return to Play ‘Best Practices’ document. The press conference can be seen on the AHSAA TV Network and the NFHS Network. The entire document will be available online on Thursday.
