Troy Softball knocks off JMU in conference series

After losing game one, the Troy Trojans (24-11, 4-2) picked up a Sun Belt Conference series win over the James Madison Dukes (18-12, 2-4) this weekend by taking the next two games.
Troy lost game one by a score of 3-2 on March 22. Troy led 2-0 going into the seventh inning when JMU scored three unanswered runs to take the first matchup.
Taylor McKinney and Anslee Finch each scored a run as Troy managed just four hits as a team. Libby Baker took the loss in the circle, striking out one batter and giving up five hits and two earned runs.
The Trojans rebounded to take game two in an 8-0 shutout on March 23. Sarah Beth Brake went 2-for-3 at the plate fro Troy in game two with a home run, two RBIs and one run, while Taylor McKinney went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Baker also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Haley Pittman earned her fifth win in the circle, striking out six batters and giving up just four hits and no runs in six innings pitched.
Troy closed out the weekend and the series with a resounding 6-2 win on March 24. D’Aun Riggs led Troy, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and on run. Jade Sinness also scored two runs. Alyssa Faircloth earned her seventh win the circle, striking out one batter and giving up four hits and one earned run in three and 2/3 innings pitched.
“I’m super happy about how things turned out this weekend,” Troy Coach Eric Newell said. “We can look back on Friday and wish we had the sweep but to come out here today, I did not think that we were sharp defensively early. But our kids competed, these young ladies are playing with a lot of heart. To get this win today against a good JMU team, to win the series, I am very proud of the team right now.”
Troy is back at home this weekend for another conference series against Southern Miss March 28-30.
