Troy Baseball falls to Southern Miss in Sun Belt series

The Troy Trojans (18-11, 4-5) split the last two games in the Sun Belt Conference Baseball series with Southern Miss (18-10, 6-3) at home this weekend.
After losing game one, Troy rebounded to tie the series with a 9-8 win on March 29. The Trojans trailed Southern Miss 7-6 going into the ninth inning but exploded to score three runs and go up 9-7. Opelika native Brooks Bryan got the scoring started with an RBI triple that drove Will Btucher and Ethan Kavanagh in and then Tremayne Cobb Jr. drove Bryan home for what would be the winning run. USM managed one more run in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t get back into scoring position to tie things up.
Kole Myers went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, while Bryan went 2-for-5 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Kyle Mock went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs.
Noah Manning earned his fourth win on the mound, striking out two batters and giving up three hits and one earned run in one and 2/3 innings pitched. Garrett Gainous struck out four and gave up five hits and two earned runs in four innings pitched.
Southern Miss secured the series win with a 5-3 win on March 30. Mock went 2-for-3 with a homer, one RBI and one run, while Bryan also hit a home run. Logan Ross took the loss on the mound, striking out two and giving up three hits and one earned run in three and 1/3 inning pitched. Brady Fuller also struck out three batters and gave up four hits and no earned runs in four and 1/3 innings toeing the rubber.
The Trojans have now dropped back-to-back conference series and will look to get back on track on April 2 against Alabama State on the road before hosting Jacksonville State on April 3 at 6 p.m. Troy then hosts Arkansas State for a conference series April 5-7.
