Zion Chapel hosts Area Softball Tournament

The Class 2A No. 3-ranked Zion Chapel Lady Rebels played host to the 2A, Area 4 Tournament on Monday, welcoming Pike Liberal Arts, Goshen, Highland Home and Luverne in for the tournament.
Zion Chapel swept their way through the first two rounds of the double elimination tournament with wins over Goshen and Luverne.
In the first round, Goshen throttled Highland Home by a score of 26-5. Jayci Rushing led Goshen at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a double, a home run, six RBIs and two runs. Hailey Owens went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and four runs. Rushing also pitched three innings and fanned three batters, while giving up six hits and five earned runs.
In the second round, Zion Chapel topped Goshen by a score of 17-0. Riley Bannin went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, while Kaylee Hodge went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Sydney Boothe pitched three innings and mowed down seven batters, while getting the shutout and the no-hitter. For Goshen, Alyssa Pippins pitched two and 2/3 innings.
Also in the second round, Pike Liberal Arts fell to Luverne by a score of 17-6. For Pike, Haylie Brown went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and one run, while Alissa Barron went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run. Mary Stephens pitched two and 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, while giving up four hits and three earned runs. Barron also pitched two and 2/3 innings and fanned a batter, while giving up four earned runs.
Next, Pike Lib faced Highland Home in an elimination game with the Lady Patriots coming away with a resounding 19-2 win. Yaley McLendon had a big game at the plate and in the circle. She went 3-for-3 on offense with a double, one RBI and two runs, while she pitched three innings and retired eight batters along with giving up just three hits and one earned run.
Zion Chapel wrapped up day one of the tournament with a 9-2 win over Luverne. Hodge went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs, while Boothe and Bannin both went 2-for-4. Bannin pitched seven innings and struck out 10, while giving up two hits and two earned runs.
More elimination games and the championship will played on Tuesday.
