Troy Baseball drops conference series at Texas State

The Troy Trojans (35-18, 17-10) hit the road this weekend and lost 2-of-3 games against the Texas State Bobcats in a Sun Belt Conference series.
Troy started the series off with a 6-0 loss on May 10, which is the first time the Trojans have been shutout all season. Peyton Watts led Troy at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Tremayne Cobb Jr. hit a double. Garrett Gainous took the loss on the mound, striking out two batters and giving up three hits and one earned run in five and 1/3 innings pitched.
For Texas State, Aaron Lugo went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and one run. Cameron Bush was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits and no runs in five and 2/3 innings toeing the rubber.
Troy rebounded with a 5-3 win on May 11. After falling behind 3-0 early, Troy scored five runs in the seventh inning and held the Bobcats scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Ethan Kavanagh, Will Butcher, Brooks Bryan, Mikey Bello and Watts each scored one run. Brooks also became Troy’s single season RBI record holder with his 82nd RBI on the year. That number is also tied for second in the nation.
Luke Lyon earned his eighth win of the year at pitcher, striking out five and giving up six hits and three earned runs in six and 1/3 innings of work. Jay Dill also earned his second save of the year with three strikeouts, while giving up one hit and no runs in two innings pitched.
For Texas State, August Ramirez went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and one run. Jonathan Martinez took the loss on the mound, giving up one hit and three earned runs in 1/3 of an inning pitched.
With the series tied, Texas State secured the series win with an 8-6 victory on Sunday. The two sides ended nine innings tied 6-6 and went into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th, Texas State picked up the game three – and series – win on a two-run walk-off home run from Chase Mora.
For Troy, Mikey Bello went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and one run. Kole Meyers also hit a home run in the loss. Dill took the loss on the mound, striking out and giving up four hits and two earned runs in two innings pitched. Grayson Stewart struck out four batters and gave up five hits and five earned runs in his three innings pitched, while Logan Ross fanned three batters and gave up no hits or runs in five innings of work.
For the Bobcats, Mora went 2-for-6 with a home run, three RBIs and one run. Rhett McCaffety got the win at pitcher, striking out one and giving up no hits or runs in 1/3 inning. Tony Robie pitched five innings and struck out three, while giving up four hits and three earned runs.
Troy now sits in third place of the Sun Belt, behind Louisiana and Southern Miss, as the Trojans head into the regular season finale this weekend at home. Troy will host James Madison for one final conference series in the regular season May 16-18.
