The Five Star Mafia Gulf Coast-Stewart summer baseball team from Troy traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., this weekend and captured the Perfect Game 15U Battle of the Beach Championship.

The Five Star Mafia went unbeaten in the tournament with a record of 4-0-1, outscoring opponents 41-15. The Mafia features players from Charles Henderson, Pike Lib, Ariton, Dothan and Opp. From Pike Lib is Charlie Fountain and Braden Shirley, while Kellen Stewart, Cooper Johnson, Clay Johnson and Owen Pugh represent Charles Henderson. Addison Senn and Conner Davidson play for 2A State Champ Ariton.

In the first game of the tournament, the Mafia shut out the Red Birds by a score of 10-0. Stewart went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs, while Clay Johnson pitched five innings and struck out four batters, while giving up one hit and no runs.

Next, the Mafia battled to a 7-7 tie with the Jax Indians. Clay Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs, while Dothan’s Carter Richards went 3-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, two RBIs and two runs. Shirley pitched one inning and gave up one hit and two earned runs.

The Mafia came back and shutout the Chain Gang by a score of 8-0. Cooper Johnson went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs. Shirley pitched four and 2/3 innings and fanned four batters along with giving up four hits and no runs.

Next, the Mafia defeated the DA Grinderz by a score of 7-3. Richards went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one run. Both Clay and Cooper Johnson scored two runs each. Opp’s Porter Nelson struck out three batters and gave up seven hits and three earned runs in six and 2/3 innings pitched.

In the championship round, the Mafia defeated the Indians 9-5 in a rematch. Clay Johnson went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, four RBIs and one run. Cooper Johnson and Shirley also scored two runs each. Fountain pitched two innings and fanned a batter along with giving up three hits and one earned run.

Charles Henderson’s Clay Johnson was named MVPitcher of the Tournament.
