Troy Post 70 wins State Championship

The Troy Post 70 19U summer baseball team won its eighth straight American Legion Baseball State Championship this past weekend.

Post 70 went 5-0 in the State Tournament to earn a spot in the American Legion Southeast Regional. On Friday, July 19, Troy started the tournament off with a 20-1 win over Post 107. Cody Walsh went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, one RBI and one run, while future Troy Trojan Cody Markham went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Troy native Payne Jefcoat earned a triple and two runs. Future Troy Trojan Brady Richardson also scored four runs.

Easton Dean pitched three innings and struck out five batters, while giving up one hit and no runs. Easton Walsh also pitched one and 2/3 innings and gave up two hits and one earned run.

Later on Friday, Post 70 throttled Hueytown by a score 15-2. Haze McCorkel led Troy at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and four runs, while Richardson went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs. Jefcoat went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and three runs. Cole Hewitt pitched three innings and fanned five batters, while giving up no hits or runs.

On Saturday, Troy shutout Post 237 by a score of 16-0. Markham went 2-for-3 with a triple, one RBI and one run, while Jefcoat and Walsh scored three runs each. Brody Lindsey pitched three innings and gave up four hits and no runs with five strikeouts.

On Sunday, Post 70 shutout Post 555 by a score of 4-0. Richardson led Troy at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Markham went 2-for-4 with two runs. Ariton’s Caden Collier and Evan Taylor scored one run each. Aiden Wright pitched all seven innings and fanned four batters, while giving up five hits and no runs.

Post 70 closed out the clean sweep later on Sunday with a 9-2 win over Post 237 in the championship round. Markham and Gunner Justice scored three runs each, while Jefcoat hit a double and earned two RBIs with one run. Richardson also earned an RBI and a run. Walsh pitched three innings and fanned three batters, while giving up two hits and one earned run. Jackson Kilcreas struck out five, while giving up one hit and no earned runs in three innings on the mound.

Post 70 will now move on to the American Legion Southeast Regional with a spot in the American Legion World Series once again on the line.
