This week, former Troy Trojan Don Callis officially signed a free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers.
Currently, the Packers are holding training camp with preseason games beginning next week. Callis took part in Rookie Mini Camps – as a camp invite – with both the Packers and San Francisco 49ers during the spring.
Callis was an all-conference defensive back at East Central Oklahoma before transferring to Troy for his senior season in 2023. Callis tallied 26 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, one interception, four pass breakups, a forced fumble, one fumble recovery and a touchdown.
Callis, who graduated from Troy last week, told Sports Illustrated that he got the contract offer from the Packers briefly after graduation.
“I was working a job about a week ago and then I graduated college and then they called me an hour or two later after I graduated,” Callis said after his first practice of Packers training camp on Tuesday. “It was a blessing to get that call. We worked out this morning; I did pretty solid and I guess I impressed.”
The job that Callis had been working was cutting grasses.
“I was a lawn mower,” he said. “Outside, from 5 in the morning to 5 o’clock for $11 an hour for this guy named Mr. Todd. It was very humbling but I’m blessed to be here now playing football, doing what I love.”
Callis is now one of nine former Trojans that are currently on NFL rosters. Jake Andrews and Marcus Jones are joined on the New England Patriots roster by Dell Pettus, who signed an undrafted rookie free agent contract following the NFL Draft.
Javon Solomon was drafted by the Buffalo Bills this offseason, while Kimani Vidal was drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers. Reddy Steward – who has been impressing in training camp, according to media reports – signed with the Chicago Bears, while Buddha Jones signed with the Seattle Seahawks and Shakel Brown signed with the San Francisco 49ers.
