On Friday, Troy University Athletics announced the hiring of Emily Carosone, considered one of the top assistant coaches in the country, as the softball program’s new associate head coach.

Carosone is coming off a four-year stint as an assistant coach at Auburn, where she also served as associate head coach in 2024. In 2024, Carosone helped the Tigers to a 29-21-1 record, with a spot in the NCAA Regional Softball Tournament.

Carosone was a three-time All-American at Auburn.

Carosone was a key part of Auburn’s defensive coaching, helping the Tigers finish second in the SEC – and 12th nationally – with a .976 fielding percentage. Carosone also served as a graduate assistant in 2017 and was a volunteer assistant at Auburn in 2018 and 2019.

While Carosone’s reputation as a coach has grown each year, her reputation as a player is even more eye opening. The Italian immigrant was three-time All-American infielder at Auburn and was a finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year in 2015. She helped her team to back-to-back Women’s College World Series appearances and ended her Tiger career as the record holder for career batting average, runs scored, hits, on-base percentage and hit by pitch.

Following her stellar college career, she was drafted 22nd overall by the Chicago Bandits of National Pro Fastpitch. She played with the Bandits from 2016 through 2018 and played for the Cleveland Comets in 2019. She also played for USSSA Pride of Women’s Professional Faspitch in 2019 and 2020.

Carosone competed for the Italy’s national softball team in the 2020 Summer Olympics, where she started all five games for Italy. She also helped Italy win the gold in the Women’s Softball European Championship in 2021.

She is also a former Olympian with the Italian National Team.

“Troy Softball is getting a great addition with the hire of Emily Carosone,” Troy Coach Eric Newell said. “I am very excited about how she will complement our coaching staff and assist in several key areas of player development. I spoke with (former Auburn head) Coach (Mickey) Dean, and he was very complimentary of Emily’s work ethic, loyalty and recruiting ability.

“Emily will be involved in many areas, but her main focus will be working with our hitters. I was excited to learn that we share a passion for timely hitting, smart base running and great defense. We are both looking forward to working with one another and maintaining the momentum that Troy Softball has had over the last couple of years.”

Additionally, Newell announced that director of player development and analytics Nate Tompkins has been elevated to assistant coach. Tompkins joined Troy’s staff in 2023.
