Troy Post 70 captures regional crown, headed back to World Series

After winning the Southeast Regional Baseball Tournament in North Carolina, Troy Post 70 is on their way back to the American Legion World Series for the third consecutive year.

Post 70 went an overall 5-1 in the Regional Tournament, defeating North Carolina-Wayne County by a score of 5-4 in the championship game.

After going 3-0 in the first three games of the tournament, Troy defeated Georgia by a score of 12-0 on Saturday. Future Troy Trojan Brady Richardson (Enterprise) led Post 70 at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs. Haze McCorkel (Dothan) went 2-for-3 with a run. Ariton’s Caden Collier went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.

Pike Lib’s Will Rice was the winning pitcher, striking out a pair of batters and giving up two hits and no runs in three and 1/3 innings on the mound. Easton Walsh pitched one and 2/3 innings, fanning two batters, while giving up no hits or runs.

On Sunday, Troy went into the championship round needing just one win in the double elimination tournament to advance to the World Series. First, Troy fell by a score 4-1 to North Carolina-Wayne County – who Post 70 defeated earlier in the tournament.

Future Troy Trojan Cody Markham (Pike Road) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a run. Brody Lindsey (Dothan) took the loss on the mound, striking out five batters and giving up five hits and four earned runs in six and 2/3 innings pitched.

Later on Sunday, Troy bounced back to take the Regional Championship with a 5-4 win over Wayne County. With the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Troy’s Cody Walsh hit a walk-off single that drove Evan Taylor in for the winning run.

Collier went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Blake Wynn (Dothan) scored two runs. Troy native Payne Jefcoat also went 1-for-3 at the plate. Aiden Wright (Dale County) pitched two innings and retired two batters, while giving up three hits and two earned runs. Walsh struck out two batters, while giving up no hits or runs in three innings on the mound. Richardson was named Tournament MVP.

Troy Post 70 will now advance to the American Legion World Series in North Carolina this week. This is Post 70’s third consecutive appearance in the World Series. Troy won the World Series crown in 2022.
