On Sunday afternoon, the Johnson Center for the Arts hosted a dedication ceremony honoring Mack Gibson and Holman and Ethel Johnson for their longtime support of the arts in Troy and Pike County.

A large, gathering of community members expressed their appreciation for the roles Gibson and the Johnsons have played in furthering the arts in Pike County.

Many of those in attendance took advantage of the opportunity to view the artwork of Mary Holman Johnson that fills the Johnson Center’s lower gallery.

Mary Holman Johnson is a Troy native and is well known in Southern circles as the daughter of Holman Johnson, a noted and highly acclaimed photographer. 

Johnson describes herself as an experimental artist working in several media forms, “Where the muse takes me.” 

Currently, Johnson said she is pushing the boundaries of paper and paint to create complex tonal and textural atmospheric images using the gel plate mono printing process.

“What inspires my work is color, texture, ancient archeology, art and architecture, the Cosmos, nature, materials, interior architecture and the process itself,” Johnson said.

The Mary Holman Johnson exhibit is open to the public during JCA hours, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admission is free.
