The Goshen Eagles will get the 2024 football season started with a preseason jamboree against Class 4A’s Geneva Panthers this Friday at home.
The Panthers are coming off a 3-7 season in 2023 but Goshen head coach Don Moore knows his team has a big task ahead of them.
“They’re a big, physical football,” Moore said of Geneva. “They’re a 4A school and have a lot of players. We have a lot of guys that have to play both ways. So, this will be a good test to see how we hold up against a team with a lot more depth and being able to see how we stand with a 4A opponent.”
Moore’s Eagles return a number of veteran starters including All-Messenger athletes like running back/linebacker Szemerick Andrews, quarterback Jayden McNabb, receiver Tyler McLendon and linebacker Landon Chandler.
With this being Goshen’s final preseason test before the regular season begins next week, Moore is looking to see physicality from his Eagles.
“I want to see physicality and I want us to finish; those are the big things,” Moore said. “Being physical up front and finishing – not just finish plays or drives but finishing the game and not getting relaxed – is what I mean; not taking our foot off the gas. I want to see our guys compete the whole time.”
Goshen and Geneva will play three quarters with the varsity and an additional two quarters of play between the junior varsity squads. The game will kickoff at 6 p.m. at Eagle Stadium in Goshen.
