Troy Post 70 won its second American Legion World Series Championship in the last three years after knocking off Midland Post 165 (Mich.) by a score of 5-2 in the championship game on Tuesday.

The two sides were knotted up 2-2 going into the top of the seventh inning when Post 70 exploded to score three runs. Troy and Midland came into the championship game as the top two defensive teams in the World Series but defensive errors spelled doom for Midland.

First, both Ariton’s Caden Colllier and Matt Snell scored on a throwing error to put Troy up 4-2 and then Blake Wynn belted a single to second base with Evan Taylor scoring on another error.

Midland wasn’t ready to pack it in just yet, however, as Nathan Ball belted a solo home run, facing two outs, to cut Troy’s lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Post 70 stood tall, however, earning its third out following the homer to secure the championship.

“One through nine, we just fight, they just fight,” Troy Post 70 Coach Ross Hixon said. “We did a good job of taking what they gave us. I felt like their two runs could have been prevented but it’s a little bit of a give and take. You just keep in the fight. There’s no shot clock, so as long as there is an out you have a chance. They just play hard and that’s all you can ask for as a coach.”

Haze McCorkel led Troy at the plate, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Taylor went 2-for-3 with a run. Collier, Snell, Gunner Justice and Troy University signee Cody Markham scored one run each.

Enterprise’s Brady Richardson, a Troy commit, pitched four innings and struck out four batters, while giving up six hits and two earned runs. Aiden Wright was the winning pitcher, striking out a batter and giving up one hit and one run in one and 1/3 innings pitched. Troy native Payne Jefcoat earned five putouts on defense, while Markham tallied eight putouts.
