Zion Chapel travels to Ellwood Christian this Friday

The Zion Chapel Rebels (1-0) will travel to the Ellwood Christian Eagles (0-1) this Friday, Aug. 30.

Zion Chapel defeated Coffee County rival Kinston by a score of 27-20 in the season opener last Friday. John Foster Hamm led the Rebel offense, completing 5-of-9 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown, while Zach English also threw a 36 yard score. Brayden Benbow rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Hamm also tallied 60 yards on the ground.

Joseph LeGear caught four passes for 80 yards and two scores. Benbow led the ZCHS defense with 21 tackles, two tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery. Jeremiah Stinson tallied 12 tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery, which he returned 99 yards for a touchdown. Connor Lee tallied 12 tackles. Hamm also converted all three of his PAT kicks.

Ellwood Christian out of Selma opened the season with a 49-0 loss to LaFayette. Ellwood is in its first season in Class 1A since 2019. The school seized its football program in 2020 and this is its first year back. Ellwood Christian started the football program back in 2009 and played its first season in the AHSAA in 2011. This will be the first time Zion Chapel and Ellwood Christian have ever played.

Zion Chapel will face Ellwood Christian at 7 p.m. this Friday on the road in Selma.
