The Troy Trojans (0-1) will hit the road for the first time under new head coach Gerad Parker this Saturday, Sept. 7, to face off against the American Athletic Conference’s Memphis Tigers (1-0).
This is the sixth all-time matchup between Troy and Memphis but is the first time these two schools have met in Division I and the first time the two have played since 1941. Memphis holds a 1-4 all-time record against Troy, beating the Trojans 32-0 in the last game between the two.
The Trojans fell 28-26 to Nevada in a heartbreaker at home to open the 2024 season last week.
“Troy is still Troy, and you saw that in the last segment with our defense getting a huge stop and our offense driving the field, fighting back to get in position to play and tie the game,” Parker said of Troy’s frustrating season-opening loss.
A bright spot for Troy in the loss was running back Damien Taylor, who tallied 103 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries in his first career start. Goose Crowder completed 20-of-30 passes for 201 yards and one score in his first start, as well. Devonte Ross grabbed seven catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, former walk-on Justin Powe recorded nine tackles in his first career start, while Brendan Jackson earned seven tackles and 1.5 tackles-for-loss in his first game as a Trojan. Jordan Stringer and Devin Lafayette also tallied seven tackles each, while Lafayette added a tackle-for-loss and a pass breakup.
Meanwhile, Memphis opened the season with a 40-0 shutout win over North Alabama last week. Memphis quarterback Seth Henigan completed 22-of-30 passes for 308 yards and two touchdowns. The Memphis defense tallied three sacks and forced three turnovers in the win. The Tigers came into 2024 as the favorites to win the AAC.
Troy and Memphis will kickoff at 11 a.m. in a game that will air nationally on ESPNU.
