Six former Trojans make NFL rosters

The NFL officially started the 2024 season last week and a total of six Troy Trojans made NFL rosters, which is the highest number of former Trojans in years.

After a stellar preseason, rookie undrafted free agent Reddy Steward made it to the Chicago Bears final cut down day. He tallied 14 tackles, two pass breakups, two interceptions and a touchdown in the preseason. In Chicago’s final preseason game, Steward intercepted two passes, including returning one for a touchdown. Ultimately, Steward was waived from the roster but then immediately signed to the Bears’ practice squad.

Former Trojan Don Callis was signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted rookie free agent prior to training camp but after suffering a hamstring injury during camp,he was ultimately released by the Packers.

Former All-Sun Belt offensive lineman Jake Andrews was expected to push for more playing time – after earning one start as a rookie – with the New England Patriots but underwent offseason surgery to repair an injury. Andrews will start off the season with the Patriots on injured reserve.

Two more former Trojans are on the Patriots roster in cornerback Marcus Jones and Dell Pettus. Pettus signed with the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent and impressed during training camp. Pettus made the Patriots’ 53-man roster following training camp.

Jones is back after suffering a season ending knee injury in 2023. In the Patriots’ season opening win against Cincinnati and recorded four tackles with one punt return for 10 yards. He also recovered a fumble in the win.

Javon Solomon was selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills and Kimani Vidal was selected in the sixth round of the draft. Both Solomon and Vidal made their teams’ 53-man roster but did not see action in the season opener last week.
