The Goshen Eagles improved to 4-0 Friday night with a 40-8 home win over the Calhoun Tigers. Goshen overpowered Calhoun with a balanced offense and great offensive line play, and jumped out to a 40-0 lead at halftime.
“Our guys performed like they should,” said Goshen head coach Don Moore. “We performed a lot better than we did last week and that was the goal.”
Jayden McNabb and Szemerick Andrews wasted no time putting the Eagles on the board. McNabb broke off a 53-yard run on the first offensive play of the game, and Andrews followed it up with a 10-yard touchdown run.
The game quickly got out of hand, with the Eagles driving down the field and scoring on an eight-yard touchdown scamper from McNabb. He rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on just five carries.
The defense got in on the fun as well. Marcell Newsome extended the lead to 21-0 on a pick-six, and forced a safety on the ensuing drive.
After only attempting one pass in a 44-21 win over Zion Chapel, the Eagles aired it out a little bit. McNabb was 3-for-5 passing, throwing for 102 yards and two touchdowns.
“It’s been a point of emphasis for us to throw the ball more and open the offense up,” Moore said. “We didn’t get a chance to do it last week with the weather, but we’ve been hard on our receivers and they’ve done a good job.”
Josh Terry had a touchdown reception in the second quarter, and later on McNabb slung a pass down the field to connect with Sam Adams for a 48-yard touchdown.
Kicker Zion Picatoste hit a 31-yard field goal late in the second half to push the lead even further.
The Eagles led 40-0 at halftime and the second half consisted of two eight-minute quarters with a running clock.
The Tigers punched it in late in the third quarter to get on the board, as quarterback Tyler Robertson took a quarterback keeper into the end zone.
Goshen plays at Highland Home next week in a pivotal 2A clash. Both teams are undefeated, and Highland Home has a 24-0 win over Charles Henderson High School under its belt. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. next Friday in Highland Home.
