Charles Henderson throttles Carroll in Saturday action

The Charles Henderson Trojans (2-1, 2-0) picked up a resounding 29-8 win over the Carroll Eagles (0-4, 0-1) on Saturday, Sept. 14, in a Class 5A, Region 2 game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy.

Charles Henderson started off hot when Nemo Williams raced to a 48-yard touchdown on the first drive of the game to give the Trojans a 6-0 lead early. The PAT was no good.

After a Carroll punt, CHHS turned the ball over on downs in Eagle territory. After a Carroll punt, Williams broke off another 46-yard run but CHHS stalled and had to punt again. This time, however, Carroll fumbled the punt return and Jamal Downing recovered it inside the Carroll 35-yard line for the Trojan special teams.

As the second quarter began, Charles Henderson turned the ball over on downs again at the Carroll 16-yard line. The two sides exchanged punts before the Trojans got going again on offense. Antonio Frazier scored on a 15-yard run with 3:45 left in the first half. The PAT extended the CHHS lead to 13-0.

On the next Carroll drive, Charles Henderson’s Ziggy Boyd recovered another Carroll fumble but Charles Henderson turned the ball over on downs and Charles Henderson took the 13-0 lead into halftime.

The Trojans had another big start to a half in the third quarter, blocking a Carroll punt. Kellen Stewart cashed in on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Frazier to extend the Trojan lead to 19-0. The PAT was no good.

Next, Carroll managed to drive deep into CHHS territory but Trojan Kam Christian snuffed out that scoring opportunity with an interception at the 1-yard line. Then, two plays later, Stewart found a streaking Noah Greene, who turned a short pass into a 97-yard touchdown with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. The PAT extended the Trojan lead to 26-0.

Carroll drove into Charles Henderson territory again but a bad snap resulted in Trojan Ty Cunningham recovering another Eagle fumble. CHHS extended the lead to 29-0 on a 22-yard field goal from Kaden Simmons with 1:57 left in the third quarter.

Carroll finally got on the scoreboard with a 2-yard touchdown run with 10:58 left in the fourth quarter. A two-point conversion cut the Trojan lead to 29-8. Neither team was able to get back into scoring position until Carroll blocked a CHHS punt with under a minute remaining. The Trojan defense stood tall once again, however, as TK Kelly intercepted an Eagle pass in the end zone to secure the 29-8 win.

Charles Henderson rolled up 422 yards of offense in the win and held Carroll to 172 yards. The Trojan defense also recorded three sacks and five turnovers. Penalties, however, were an issue for CHHS. The Trojans were flagged 13 times for 127 yards, while Carroll was penalized eight times for 42 yards.

Williams rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries, much of that coming in the first half. Frazier recorded 77 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries along with one catch for 35 yards and a touchdown. Stewart completed 3-of-10 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

Boyd led the CHHS defense with eight tackles, five tackles-for-loss, two sacks and a fumble recovery. Zarion Mack also recorded four tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss and a sack.

Charles Henderson is on the road next week for another region game, against Montgomery-Catholic.
