A group of ladies at the Colley Senior Complex were at the Fresenius Kidney Care Troy Tuesday to take gifts from the heart and “stitched” with love to the patients there.

The gifts were 64 handmade tote bags and each included a hand-made, lightweight blanket, and a devotional book for patients at Fresenius Kidney Care Troy.

The idea originated when Nuri Abdurrahman was ready to give up on teaching a sewing class at the Colley Senior Complex. At the time, she was about walk out of the empty sewing room Shirley Stewart and Elaine Pfneisel waked in and the sewing room was in business once again.

Today, the sewing/quilting class is back and the members are dedicated to using their talents to benefit others and to show appreciation for those who make it possible to do good for others.

However, the “gifts of love” would not have been possible without the generosity of others including David and Sherry Helms at Home Gallery and AKA sorority.

“David and Sherry donated the material for the bags from material samples there at Home Gallery,” Abdurrahman said.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Kappa Pi Omega Chapter members, donated the blankets for the tote bags.  Catherine Jordan and Artreca Thomas said the donation was from the AKA’s “Lighting Up Our Community” project.

The thoughtful and caring donations were graciously accepted by Fresenius Kidney Care Troy representatives, Nekena Simmons, PCT; Zona Shockley unit secretary, Angelica Lewis, RN, and Stacey Nelson, CM.
