Jean Quarles
Jean Quarles Mary died September 16, 2024 in Birmingham, Alabama, on her 97th birthday. She was born in Troy, Alabama on September 16, 1927, and attended the public schools of Troy, Mary Baldwin College and Vanderbilt University. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa at Vanderbilt and graduated magna cum laude in 1949. After living in New Orleans, she returned to Troy, where, after a career spanning twenty-five years, she retired as Executive Secretary to the Chancellor of Troy State University. She was a lifelong, active Methodist. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and several bridge clubs. Her favorite activities were spending time with her family, working on genealogy and annual family trips to the beach. Mrs. Mary was preceded in her death by her parents, Ethel Burks and Hugh Vernon Quarles of Troy and her sister, Betty Burks Quarles Matthews of Birmingham. She is survived by her four children: James Quarles Mery (Rikke), Marsha Lassiter (Griffin), Molly Holt (Don), Marilyn Mery (Jeffrey Folinus), seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. A private graveside service will be held in Troy, Alabama. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Mary family.
