The Troy Police Department along with the family of former officer Elijah Rouse gathered on Monday for memorial service a year and a day after his unexpected death.
Rouse had been a corrections officer and joined the Troy Police Department in 2019. He died at his home in Brundidge on Sept. 22, 2023.
“We keep Elija’s memory alive by honoring him every day,” Troy Police Chief Randall Barr said. “We don’t know what tomorrow holds. If nothing else, this is to remind us to live each day like it’s our last. To treasure these moments with our loved ones because we don’t know when that last day will be.
“We will never forget Elijah and what he’s done for this great city. The presence of the people here – the family, the coworkers – speaks volumes about Elijah and who he was.”
Rouse’s wife, Shantell, said she was thankful for the support that was given to her family during their time of loss.
“I’ve been comforted by the Lord, I’ve been comforted by you all, the family and friends,” Rouse said. “And, I want to be the person that extends the same love and kindness that I have received from this Troy Police Department and this City of Troy. I want to be a person that is able to give it back. Thank you so much for what you have done. I’m forever grateful for your love and kindness.”
Troy Mayor Jason Reeves and Officer Latifa Anderson also spoke briefly during the memorial.
After a benediction led by Lt. Brian McLendon, the family and law enforcement officers released balloons in Elijah Rouse’s memory.
