TPD charges two men in copper theft

Two men are in jail after Troy police caught the suspects returning to the scene of a crime.

Troy Police Chief Danny Barron said the TPD launched an investigation into the theft of $15,000 worth of copper on Oct. 24. Barron said the copper had been stolen from a business in the 100 block of U.S. Highway 231 North over several weeks.

Barron said on Oct. 25, around 11 p.m. police received information the suspects had returned to the scene. Barron said officers responded and one suspect was apprehended after a brief foot chase. The second suspect was located using a drone and taken into custody without incident.

Barron said the suspects were identified as 25-year-old Derron Lee Newman and 57-year-old Coley Christopher Grace, both residents of Troy. Grace faces charges of first-degree theft of property, while Newman is charged with both first-degree theft of property and attempting to elude law enforcement.

Barron said both men were processed at the Troy City Jail before being transferred to the Pike County Jail. Grace’s bond is set at $20,000, and Newman’s bond is set at $11,000, Barron said.
