Sam Green said there’s a reason he won’t appear on the ballot for Pike County Commission District 1 on Tuesday.

Green serves as Brundidge Police Chief and in March he won the Democratic Primary for Pike County Commission District 1 with 71.28 percent of the vote. He defeated Greg Wright 382-162.  Since Green faced no opposition for the Republican Party, his name should have been on the ballot on Tuesday. But, Green said he was forced to decline the commission seat.

“The reason I ran is because I want to serve the people of Pike County,” Green said. “And, I want to thank all of the people that supported me in the Primary Election. I was told by the Alabama Ethics Commission I could accept the position. But, Brundidge City Manager Willie Wright got an opinion from the Attorney General’s office that said I couldn’t hold two for-profit government positions.”

Green said he had informed the Brundidge City Council of his decision to run for County Commission District 1 prior to the election. However, he said the Alabama Ethics Commission and Attorney General’s Office were not consulted until after he won in the March primary.

Green said the AG’s opinion forced him to decline a seat on the Pike County Commission, even though he had been elected.

“I would have loved to serve the community, the citizens of District 1 and the people of Pike County,” Green said. “I’ve been in public service my whole life, and I wanted to serve all of Pike County.”

Green said he wanted to thank all of the people that supported him in the primary election.
