Chris Wilkes served nearly two decades on the Pike County Schools Board of Education and Monday night was his final board meeting.

Wilkes was recognized with a reception and presented with a plaque in honor of 18 years served on the board prior to the Nov. 4 meeting.

“The job of a school board member is really a labor of love,” Pike County Superintendent Dr. Mark Bazzell said to Wilkes. “It’s a thankless job. The little bit of compensation you get, you turn around and spend it on Boston Butts and everything else (for fundraisers). You’re really here for the love of the school and the kids and all. I want to thank you for your service and I’m sure the folks in Goshen, and throughout the county, are appreciative, as well.”

Wilkes said he was proud of everything that the board has accomplished in his 18 years.

“I’ve enjoyed the last 18 years,” he emphasized. “I think from the time I started, we’ve done a lot and I’m very proud of the things we’ve accomplished. We have a new school at Banks and a lot of other projects, programs and buildings during that time. I’m proud of that and happy to see where we go in the future.”
