The only local contested race in the 2024 election in Pike County will come down to write-in votes.
The District 1 Pike County Commission seat was left vacant after Democratic Primary winner Sam Green had to decline the nomination in order to remain as Brundidge’s police chief.
Since there was no Republican opposition, the election will be determined by write-in votes. With 31 of 36 precincts reporting, there were 651 write-in votes.
Probate Judge Michael Bunn said there were a total of 4,111 ballots cast in District 1, so additional write-in votes were possible.
Bunn said the write-in votes would have to be tallied by hand to determine the winner of the District 1 seat. Bunn said he was unsure how long it would take to work through counting the write-in votes.
For the 2nd Congressional District seat, Caroleene Dobson led Shomari Moore 6,186 to 4,150 in Pike County with 86.11 percent of the vote in. At press time, Dobson was leading the race 56.1 percent to 43.9 percent, but only 18 percent of precincts were reporting.
