On Nov. 8, Tori Hester set the program career kills record as the Troy Trojans (12-12, 7-7) completed a two game Sun Belt Conference series sweep over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-17, 5-9).
Hester led Troy with 30 kills in the win, which moved her in first place all-time in school history in career kills. She also became the first Troy player in school history to record 30 or more kills in back-to-back games, as well. She also became the all-time Troy leader in total points and kills per set, as well. Her streak of 46 consecutive matches with double-digit kills continues to lead the country.
“The all-time leader in kills. She led us both nights with back-to-back 30 kill matches,” Troy Coach Josh Lauer said. “Just really impressive, and so thankful and happy for her. She deserves all the accolades. She’s a great player and absolutely one of the all-time best in Troy history.”
Troy lost the first set against Southern Miss 25-20 but tied the match with a 25-22 win in the second. Southern Miss retook the lead with a 25-21 win in the third set only for the Trojans to tie the match again with a 25-23 win in the fourth. In the final set, Troy won 15-10 with Hester earning the game-winning kill.
“Just another all-out amazing team performance tonight,” Lauer said. “From being down so big in the fourth set and Olivia Grantham coming in and making that service run. The defensive effort by everyone. The play that Caroline Darracott and Audrey Worthington brought to the court off the bench. Just a really phenomenal team after tonight. I couldn’t be more proud of all of our players and how they played for each other.”
Along with the 30 kills, Hester added 13 digs and three blocks, while Sara Bates added eight kills, two aces and 13 digs. Janelle Stuempfig dished 43 assists with two aces, 20 digs and three blocks.
The Trojans sit in fourth place of the Sun Belt West behind Arkansas State, Texas State and South Alabama. Troy closes out the regular season Nov. 14-15 at home against Appalachian State.
