The Charles Henderson Trojans wrestling squad will open up the 2024 season this Thursday, Nov. 14, with a quad-match in Enterprise.
The young Trojans team features two seventh graders, an eighth grader, one freshman, two sophomores, one junior and a senior.
“Practice has been very productive, which is a carryover from a productive offseason,” CHHS Coach Shannon Powell said.
Powell pointed to senior Brendon Mosely, sophomore Jackson Jones, freshman Henry Grenon and eighth grader David Dawson, who all return from last season’s team, as leaders heading into the season.
“The goals for this season are just continuing to build strong, young men and take more than two wrestlers to sectionals this year,” Powell said.
CHHS will open the season this Thursday with a quad-match in Enterprise.
“I want and expect to see improvement and more aggression from our returning wrestlers, and I expect the first year wrestlers to compete,” Powell said of what he wants to see in the first match.
Along with the team leaders, the CHHS Wrestling team includes seventh grader Watlee Bavaro, seventh grader Hayes West, sophomore Elijah Warren and junior Ty Cunningham.
Charles Henderson will face off alongside Enterprise, Houston Academy and Dothan in the season opening quad-match on Nov. 14 and then heads to Pike Road for a match on Dec. 10 and faces Montgomery Catholic in a match on Dec. 12. The Trojans will head to Beauregard for wrestling action against Beulah, Elmore County and Dadeville.
CHHS takes part in the Region 1 Duals Jan. 10-11 and then heads to Pike Road for another match on Jan. 16. The Seeding Tournament takes place for Class 5A on Feb. 1.
