Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Chris Amos was the featured speaker at the City of Troy’s Veterans Day observance on Monday morning , November 11, 2024 at the Troy Recreation Center.
Amos is native of Troy and a graduate of Troy University,
He is a combat veteran with more than 35 total years of military service with 20 years being on active duty service. His military service has included Operation Desert Storm/Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
“In my 36 years of service to this great nation, I have personally witnessed the dramatic demonstrations of service from American veterans and they have come from all ages,” Amos said. “I have fought alongside a college professor with a doctorate degree who led soldiers in the Gulf War in Saudi Arabia. I have fought alongside 20-year old kids with bravery beyond their years.
“Kids would volunteer for convoys requiring driving down roads that had more 20-IED craters only one mile in distance.”
Amos said he ate homemade chocolate chips cookies with a 20 year-old the night before he died in a convoy the next day.
“Peace itself demands hard work and renewed sacrifice by those who serve and, when peace fails and freedom is threatened, Americans have responded,” Amos said. “No matter where or when our veterans have served, they have always served with distinction. They knew they had to fight. They knew they had to sacrifice. They knew they had to win and they did just that, time after time, battle after battle.
“Veterans Day is for a day for all Americans to walk toward the future, honoring our veterans by living in the freedoms they have won and preserved for us going forward.”

To the members of the Army
As Commander-in-Chief, I take pleasure
in commending the reading of the Bible to
all who serve in the armed forces of the
United States. Throughout the centuries,
men of many faiths and diverse origins
have found in the Scared Book words of
wisdom, counsel and inspiration. It is a
fountain of strength and, now, as always, anaid in attaining the highest aspirations of the human soul.
Very sincerely, yours
Franklin D. Roosevelt
