On Tuesday, Charles Henderson High School head football coach Quinn Hambrite announced that his time with the school has come to an end.
Hambrite made the announcement via release of a statement.
“After much prayer and consideration with my family, it is with great grief and anguish that I announce my tenure at Charles Henderson High School has come to an end,” Hambrite’s statement read. “I appreciate you all for accepting my family and I as your own. To the administration, thank you for your vision, guidance and wisdom; you have truly helped me grow as a leader, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity that you gave me.
“To my Troy support system, parents, guardians, stakeholders and everyone else that played a significant role in our program, you all are amongst the best to ever do it. Lastly, to my players and coaches, thank you for some of the best memories over the past four years that will last a lifetime. I will be eternally grateful for Troy.”
Hambrite told The Messenger that it was one of the toughest decisions of his life to step down at CHHS.
“You don’t just make a decision like this off one or two incidents but I will say that it had nothing to do with the sanctions or forfeits from this season,” Hambrite continued. “It was more so making sure that I take time for my family. It took a lot of prayer and consideration to make this decision. Between my family – and mentally – I felt like it was best for me to take a step back and reevaluate everything I have going on; whether it be the option of going somewhere else or spending more time with my family or whatever else. I’m going to miss this place. There will always be a special place in my heart for Troy. It was the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make in my coaching career, for sure.”
Hambrite was named the head football coach at CHHS in 2021 after having served as defensive coordinator at Carver-Montgomery from 2018 through the 2020 season. Prior to that, he was the head coach at Central-Hayneville in 2017 and an assistant coach at Hillcrest-Evergreen in 2015 and 2016. He began his coaching career at Prattville in 2012 and was an assistant at Carver in 2013 and 2014.
The former Huntingdon College football player went 21-23 during his tenure at CHHS, which including two straight playoff appearances and a state runner-up finish in 2022. He holds an overall record of 23-31 in five years as a head coach that also includes an 0-9 season this past due to CHHS being forced to forfeit five wins.
Hambrite was named the AFCA 5A Coach of the Year and the Troy Messenger’s Coach of the Year for the 2022 season.
“My favorite coaching moment in my career was the goal line stop against UMS Wright (in 2022),” Hambrite recalled. “That was a situation where a decision had to be made about whether we let them score and get the ball back or try to make the stop. (Zarion) Mack and Damien (Hart) and Benton (Dunn) and all those guys made that stop. That would be the most memorable moment I’ve had in my career, along with that state championship run.
“There are a lot of great memories here, even the small ones like my first senior class winning their homecoming. There’s just so many great memories I’ll take with me from this place.”
