The Troy Trojans (13-13, 8-8) celebrated Senior Night with a 3-1 win over the Appalachian State Mountaineers (17-8, 11-3) on Friday to close out the regular volleyball season.
Following a close 3-2 loss to the Mountaineers on Thursday, the Trojans dominated much of the match. After losing the first set 25-22, the Trojans rallied to win the next three straight 25-16, 33-31 and 25-21 to win the match.
“It was a really great night. I’m super happy for our seniors to be able to have their last match in Trojan Arena be a victory,” Troy Coach Josh Lauer said. “It’s always easier to have senior night end on a win. Great team contribution and I’m super proud of everybody who returned today and didn’t let yesterday’s tough loss get them down. We did really great tonight, with a lot of contributions across the board. People really stepped up.
“Kalina stepped up, Sarah Bates played great defensively, and our serving was on point, which was the match’s difference-maker. They are a really great team, one of the best in the Sun Belt. Our side of the tournament plays into App State, and we are going to be prepared to play with other great teams.”
Tori Hester led Troy with 22 kills, one assist, three aces and nine digs, while Kalina Calvillo added 12 kills and three blocks. Sara Bates earned six kills, one ace and 22 digs, while Janelle Stuempfig dished 34 assists and Audrey Worthington tallied eight kills and four blocks.
Lulu Ambrose led Appalachian State with 11 kills and six digs.
Troy heads to Foley next week to take part in the Sun Belt Volleyball Tournament. The Trojans will enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed in the Sun Belt West and will likely play Georgia State in the opening round of the tournament on Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.
