Troy Women claim Great Alaska Shootout Crown

On Sunday morning, the Troy Trojans (3-4) captured the 41st Annual Great Alaska Shootout Championship with an 86-69 win over the North Dakota State Bisons (3-2).
In addition to winning the tournament, Troy’s Shaulana Wagner was named Great Alaska Shootout MVP, and both she and Zay Dyer earned All-Tournament honors. In the history of the longstanding tournament, Troy is the first team from the State of Alabama to win. Troy’s also the first Sun Belt team to ever take the crown.
Troy trailed 16-15 through the first period of action and the Bisons maintained a 36-35 lead at halftime, but the second half was all Troy. The Trojans outscored North Dakota State 30-9 in the third quarter and 51-33 overall in the second half. Troy shot 47.7 percent from the field and held North Dakota State to 33.3 percent shooting, while the Trojans dominated the boards, as well. Troy outrebounded the Bisons 51-34 and also forced 14 turnovers. Troy also owned the paint, outscoring North Dakota State 56-28 inside.
Wagner, the tournament MVP, tallied five points, seven rebounds, seven assists, one steal and one block in the win, while Zay Dyer earned 13 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Ashley Baez chipped in with 12 points and two steals. Emma Imevbore came off the bench to score 12 points and grab 11 rebounds with two blocks.
North Dakota State was led by Avery Koenen with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists.
Wagner finished the tournament averaging 12.5 points, five rebounds and five assists as MVP. Dyer averaged 13.5 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and one block, earning All-Tournament honors, as well.
After taking a break for Thanksgiving, Troy will finally put an end to its brutal 8-game road stretch to open the season at Mississippi Valley State on Dec. 1.
