The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will begin an access management project along U.S. Highway 231 in Troy on Monday, Dec. 2, weather permitting.
The project will begin at Elba Highway (State Route 87) and go to Industrial Park Boulevard on Highway 231 in Troy. The project was presented to the public on Aug. 23 and will limit some turning movements on Highway 231 by installing raised concrete islands in the media and U-turn bulbs at multiple locations along the Highway 231 corridor.
According to ALDOT, limiting left turn movements reduces the number of conflict points that more often lead to serious injuries and fatalities and will increase safety. The section of Elba Highway to George Wallace Drive will have two separate U-turn bulbs southbound between Lakeside Drive and Elba Highway, and also at Lakeside Drive.
The section of Troy Plaza Loop to Emma Drive will also have three separate U-turn bulbs with one just after Trojan Parkway, one northbound between Dozier Drive and So. Franklin Drive and a final one northbound between So. Franklin Drive and Emma Drive.
The section of Limestone Spring Road to Industrial Boulevard will also have two separate U-turn bulbs with one southbound between Limestone Spring Road and Mockingbird Lane and the other one northbound just before Diamond Drive.
According to ALDOT, lane closures and reduced speed limits are expected during construction.
Dothan’s Wiregrass Construction Company, Inc. secured the $2.7 million contract for the project by submitting the lowest bid that met project requirements. The project is expected to be completed in Summer of 2025.
