According to multiple media reports, the University of Michigan is hiring former Troy University Football Coach Chip Lindsey as the school’s next offensive coordinator.

Lindsey served as the head coach at Troy from 2019 until 2021, going 15-19 during his tenure with no bowl appearances. Lindsey had previously served as quarterbacks coach at Troy in 2010, under Larry Blakeney.

Lindsey has spent the past two seasons as he offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at North Carolina. North Carolina had previously been rumored to be pursuing another former Troy coach, Jon Sumrall, to serve as its next head coach until Sumrall signed an extension with Tulane and made it clear he would not be taking the job.

Lindsey, a former North Alabama receiver, grew up in Madison and made a name for himself in the state as a high school coach. He served as head coach at Colbert Heights High School and Spain Park along with serving as an assistant at a number of schools, including offensive coordinator at Hoover in 2007.

Lindsey spent time as an analyst at Auburn in 2013 and then became offensive coordinator at Southern Miss in 2014 and Arizona State in 2016. He served in that same position under Gus Malzhan at Auburn in 2017 and 2018 before taking the head-coaching job at Troy.

Since being relieved of his duties at Troy, Lindsey has served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at both Central Florida and North Carolina.

Michigan, who will play Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Dec. 31, averaged less than five yards per play in 2024.
