The Troy Trojans (9-4, 2-0) men’s basketball team picked up their second Sun Belt Conference win of the season 69-61 over the Appalachian State Mountaineers (6-7, 0-2) on the road Thursday.
The contest was a back-and-forth contest for the majority of the game. Troy led 33-30 at halftime and held on to a tight 57-56 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the second half. Troy’s Tayton Conerway then drilled a three-pointer to put Troy up 60-56 and the Trojans would never look back as the Mountaineers were unable to come within three points at any time for the remainder of the second half.
Troy shot 43.9 percent from the field and held Appalachian State to 37.5 percent shooting, while the Trojans also won the rebound battle 38-32. Troy scored just two points off nine App State turnovers and the Mountaineers scored 15 points off 12 Trojan turnovers, while Troy outscored Appalachian State’s bench 21-4.
“We got off to a bad start, but our guys responded, and I am proud of them for that,” Troy Coach Scott Cross said. “It was a good all-around game for us. We had some mental mistakes, but man we did some great things. We shot the ball extremely well.
“To outrebound these guys, I think is a great feather in our cap. Holding them under 40 percent was another great thing. It’s a tough place to win. You’re in elevation and we’ve been traveling. It’s our first game back in 11 days. It’s a huge win for the guys.”
Conerway led Troy with 16 points, four rebounds, eight assists and two steals, while both Marcus Rigsby Jr. and Thomas Dowd scored 12 points each. Dowd also grabbed six rebounds and earned two steals. Theo Seng added nine points and Myles Rigsby blocked two shots. All 16 of Conerway’s came on three-point attempts as he was 4-for-4 in three-point shooting.
For Appalachian State, Myles Tate scored 20 points an earned five assists with four steals, while Jalil Beaubrun scored 12 points and grabbed seven boards.
Troy is back on the road Saturday, Jan. 4, against Marshall at 3 p.m. in a game that will stream on ESPN+.
