Dennis was raised in Troy and was a football star at Charles Henderson High School. Dennis earned All-State honors as an athlete in 2010 as a senior, throwing for 1,170 yards and rushing for 1,444 yards that year. Dennis was the first player in CHHS history to throw and run for 1,000 yards or more in a single season and broke the school rushing touchdowns record. His father, Steve Dennis, served as Director of Athletics at Troy University for a number of years.

Dennis played college football at Georgia Tech as a defensive back, receiver and special teams player. Dennis tied the Georgia Tech school record by playing in all 54 games of his four-year college career.

Dennis started his coaching career in 2015, fresh out of college, as coaching intern at Ohio State University. In 2016 and 2017 he served as a graduate assistant at Ohio State and then became a senior quality control coach at OSU in 2018 and 2019 before being named quarterback coach in 2020.

Dennis remained quarterbacks coach at Ohio State through the 2023 season when he was named quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Tulsa this past season. While at Ohio State, Dennis helped produce three Heisman finalist quarterbacks and future NFL first round picks like CJ Stroud, Justin Fields and Dwayne Haskins.
