The Troy Fire Department responded to a residential fire on Plum Street in Troy on Jan. 15.
According to a release from Troy Fire Chief Michael Stephens, the Pike County Communications District received a call at 9:36 a.m. on Jan. 15 with a report of a structure fire at a residence located on the 400 block of Plum Street in Troy. Firefighters arrived on the scene of the fire three minutes after receiving the call and observed some smoke and flames coming from the residence.
Firefighters made entry into the residence immediately upon arrival and began an “interior fire attack” along with initiating a search for any victims that may be trapped inside. The fire was deemed under control within five minutes of entry and no occupants were inside the residence at the time of firefighters’ arrival.
A single resident that had been inside the home at the time the fire was ignited safely evacuated. The Troy Police Dept., Haynes Ambulance and City of Troy Utilities assisted in the incident.
“We would like to remind everyone to diligently practice fire safety,” Stephens said. “With the consistently colder weather that has been in place, and with forecasts for even more intense cold weather to arrive next week, the Troy Fire Dept. would like to encourage everyone to practice fire prevention daily and to test their smoke alarms.
“Do not leave actively burning fires in fireplaces unattended. If using electric heaters, keep flammable materials at least three feet away from the heater, do not use extension cords to power the space heater and do not plug more than one space heater into a single wall outlet. Also, do not leave space heaters unattended and do not plug space haters into a power strip. If you have gas fueled heat, such as natural gas or propane, it is recommended to have a carbon monoxide detector in place.”
