High School Hoops: Pike Lib bests Goshen in area battle

On Thursday, the Pike Liberal Arts Patriots earned a 51-48 Class 2A, Area 3 win over the Goshen Eagles.
Pike led 14-11 going into the second quarter but trailed 31-27 at halftime. Goshen held on to a 41-37 lead going into the final period but Pike outscored Goshen 14-7 in the final quarter of play to take the three-point win.
Jackson Mitchell led Pike with 15 points, while Sawyer Keck added 12 points as the Patriots moved to 2-1 in area play. Goshen was led by Ahmad Rogers with 14 points, while Sam Adams tallied nine points, six rebounds and four steals. Jayden McNabb also earned nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks, while Ja’Darius Burney scored six points and earned six steals. Marcell Newsome also totaled eight points and six rebounds.
The Pike Lady Patriots also moved to 2-1 in the area with a 54-24 win over Goshen on Thursday. Mary Holland Stephens led Pike with 14 points, while Riley Burkett scored 10. Ja’Nia Martin led Goshen with 13 points.
The Ariton Purple Cats also picked up an exciting 54-52 Class 2A, Area 4 win over Barbour County on Thursday after Conner Davidson hit a game-winning layup to give the Cats their first area win of the season.
Davidson led Ariton with 16 points, while Bryson Rhett added 15 points and six rebounds. Addison Sent also tallied eight points and 11 rebounds.
The Ariton Lady Cats also won 54-31 over Barbour County to move to 3-1 in area play. Macileigh Bragg led Ariton with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Nya Allen scored 10 points.
The Zion Chapel Rebels fell 77-34 in a Class 2A, Area 3 loss to Luverne, while the Lady Rebels also lost 48-15 to Luverne in an area game. Shea Wambles led the Lady Rebels with six points in the loss.
