Schools, local governments to be affected by winter weather

The Pike County area will see what could be a historic incoming winter weather situation this week and as a result it will have an affect on local cities and schools.
All of the local school systems, including Pike County Schools, Troy City Schools, Pike Liberal Arts School, New Life Christian Academy, Dale County Schools and Coffee County Schools, will be closed Jan. 21-22 due to the threat of the winter weather. As a result, all extracurricular activities on those days are cancelled, as well.
All Troy University campuses in Troy, Dothan, Montgomery and Phenix City will also be closed Jan. 21-22. University offices will be closed and no classes will be held but essential services such as dining will continue to be offered to students on the Troy campus.
All City of Troy offices will also be closed Jan. 21-22.
“We will watch and wait on an announcement for Thursday,” Mayor Jason Reeves said. “Our Environmental Services employees, Utility employees, public safety employees and critical infrastructure employees will be working to keep the community safe and as functional as possible for the medical community and critical industry.”
Reeves said that the city would attempt to do Tuesday’s garbage pickup in the morning but it will remain contingent on weather. The City of Troy’s public meeting scheduled for Jan. 21 at Troy City Hall have been cancelled and will be rescheduled to a later date. These meetings were scheduled to discuss outdoor recreation facilities and improvements at Knox Street Park under the Land and Water Conservation Fund Program.
The Troy City Schools Board of Education meeting scheduled for Jan. 21 has been moved to Jan. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the Troy City Schools Central Office Boardroom in Troy.
Additionally, all trials at Troy Municipal Court scheduled for Jan. 22 will be rescheduled to a future date and e-mails and regular mail will be sent out with the new date and time for those trials. The Pike County Circuit Clerks Office will also be closed Jan. 21-22 and Circuit Judge Jeff Kelley has cancelled all court for Jan. 21-22, as well.
The Troy Police Department, Pike County Sheriff’s Office, Troy University Police and Brundidge Police Department will all be fully staffed during the winter weather. Anyone that is concerned about a love one during the the weather can contact (334) 566-0500 to have police check on them.
All Pike County offices will also be closed Jan. 21-22. The Pink County Road Department will be working throughout the weather in attempt to keep roads passable, including treating bridges and addressing trouble spots as they arise.
The Pike County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) issued a winter storm warning on jan. 20 at 4:05 a.m. that will be in affect until Jan. 22 at 6 a.m. Heavy snow with a total accumulations of up to two inches are expected for Barbour, Bullock, Dallas, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Pike and Russell Counties.
This weather is expected to impact roads, especially bridges and overpasses, which will likely become slick and hazardous during the winter weather.
“When snow starts to fall on Tuesday, which we can’t be certain extatly fo the timing, it will immediately stick to everything,” Mayor Reeves said in a statement. “That means road conditions will immediately begin to become dangerous. Stay off the roads once this starts unless it is absolutely necessary you be out. There is a possibility that roads be impassible Tuesday. Midday until Wednesday midday.
“We won’t know until happens but it’s very likely. We have people that will have to try and be out to provide critical services. We have limited resources, please keep that in mind and stay home if you can.”
Reeves said that warming stations in Troy will not be opened in an effort to keep people off the roads but the city will check on anyone in danger and get them to safety if needed. Utility employees will be on sight overnight on Tuesday in case of utility issues.
