Troy Athletics gears up for big weekend

As things begin to thaw out in Troy, The Troy Trojans gear up for a big weekend for basketball and baseball/softball.
The men’s basketball team will host rival South Alabama at Trojan Arena, while Troy baseball and softball will be hosting their annual Fan Day this weekend. The Troy women will also face Louisiana on the road.
The Troy Trojans men’s basketball team is coming off a frustrating 64-63 loss to South Alabama on the road last weekend and will be looking for a measure of revenge against their rivals this Saturday. Coming into the weekend, South Alabama is in first place in the Sun Belt Conference with a 6-1 conference record, while Troy is tied with Texas State, Marshall and Louisiana at fourth place.
South Alabama currently has the top ranked defense in the conference and fifth ranked offense, while Troy’s defense is ranked third and the offense is ranked seventh. Troy is ranked third in the Sun Belt in field goal percentage, while South Alabama is first in opponent field goal percentage. Troy is ranked fifth in rebounding and second in opponent rebounding, while South Alabama ranks first in both turnover margin and assist-to-turnover ratio. South Alabama ranks first in assists and Troy is third, while the Trojans are third in blocked shots. South Alabama ranks first in steals and Troy is right behind them in second place.
Individually, South Alabama’s Corey Myles is sixth in the conference in scoring, averaging 14.9 points per game. Myles also ranks fifth in the conference with 4.4 assists per game, while Troy’s Tayton Conerway is second in the Sun Belt with 4.8 assists per game. Conerway also leads the Sun Belt with 3.2 steals per game.
For the season, Conerway is averaging 12.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.2 steals per game. Myles Rigsby averages 11.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
Troy and South Alabama will play at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Troy Baseball and Softball will also have a big weekend. Troy Athletics will kick off the weekend on Friday at Trojan Arena for the annual Troy Baseball/Softball First Pitch Banquet at 6 p.m. D1Baseball’s Mark Etheridge will be speaking at the banquet. There will also be a silent auction and meet-the-team events.
On Saturday, both Troy Baseball and Softball will host open scrimmages at 10:45 a.m. at their respective stadiums with free admission. Then, prior to Troy’s basketball game against South Alabama, the Troy Baseball/Softball Fan Day will also be held in the concourse at Trojan Arena beginning at 4 p.m. Along with free team posters, fans will be able to get free Conecuh Sausage Dogs and autographs from members of both the baseball and softball teams. A general admission ticket to the basketball game is required for admission to Fan Day.
Along with the Fan Day festivities, Troy Basketball will have some special promotions, as well. Tickets to the Troy vs. South Alabama game will be just $5 and fans are asked to wear cardinal to the game. The first 3,000 fans to the game will receive a free Cardinal T-Roy basketball shirt and “BEAT SOUTH” stickers, while the first 2,000 students will also receive free Troy Trojans light sticks. Also, Troy will have $2 Busch Light beer at the concession stand along with Donut Bacon Cheeseburgers. There will also be a special chainsaw juggler for the halftime show.
