A rare winter storm turned Pike County into a winter wonderland on Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, an Arctic dry mass moved into the area over Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida panhandle late Monday. The colder air caused snow to accumulate quickly on Tuesday. According to the NWS, stormspotters reported 5- to 6-inch accumulation across Pike County.
According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the last major snowfall in Pike County was March 13, 1993, when accumulation totaled 4-inches. Prior to the 1993 event, there was a 3-inch accumulation Jan. 31, 1977, and the largest recorded snowfall occurred on Feb. 10, 1973, with 11-inches of snow.
While only patches of snow remain now, the chilly weather isn’t quite over.
According to the NWS, the weather will warm slightly over the next few days, with a high of 51 on Saturday with a low of 30 overnight.
Beginning Monday, the warming trend will heat up slightly with highs in the mid-50s and a low near 40. By Wednesday, the temperature is expected to climb back into the low 60s with overnight temperatures in the mid-40s.
