The Troy Trojans (12-7, 5-3) avenged a heartbreaking loss to South Alabama Jaguars (14-6, 6-2) last weekend with a 65-55 victory over their rival on Jan. 25.
South Alabama went up 1-0 in the opening minutes of the game but Troy led for all but three minutes of the entire game. After the Trojans went up 4-3 with 17:22 remaining the first half, Troy never trailed again. The Trojans led by as many as 13 and went on a 14-0 run in the first half leading to the a margin South Alabama was never able to overcome.
Troy shot just 35.9 percent from the field, while South Alabama shot 39.2 percent but the Trojans also forced 15 turnovers and out-rebounded the Jaguars 41-35. Troy also outscored South 16-7 in second chance points. In the first half, Troy knocked down eight three-pointers, which tied the most for Troy this season.
“Our guys were locked in defensively. You could see it in their eyes. That’s the look that we have to have for us to be the best team possible,” Troy Coach Scott Cross said. “Before the game, I put an eight and 14 on the board and asked what those numbers meant. Nobody knew. We’re eight points away from being undefeated in conference play and 14 points away from being 16-3. So I asked them, ‘Which possession do you want to take off?’ Tonight, I don’t think we took many off.”
Troy enjoyed a fired up Trojan Arena crowd with an attendance of 5,041, the third most in arena history.
“It’s way more fun to play with a crowd like that,” Cooper Campbell said. “It’s easier to get hyped up and stuff. When you hit a shot the crowd goes crazy, so it’s fun for sure and it helps us out.”
Myles Rigsby has been dinged up with an injury over the last few weeks but his health was not in doubt on Saturday as the sophomore dazzled the Trojan Arena with a pair of alley-oop dunks. Rigsby ended the contest with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks as he filled up the stat sheet.
Tayton Conerway just missed out on a double-double as he tallied 10 points, nine assists, five rebounds and five steals, while Cooper Campbell totalled 12 points and Jackson Fields grabbed 10 rebounds with seven points.
South Alabama was led by Jayden Cooper with 17 points.
Coming in to the contest South Alabama was first in the Sun Belt and this win moves them into a two-way tie with Arkansas State, while Troy remains tied for third. Troy will now set its sights on another home contest on Monday against Southern Miss.
