The Troy Trojans (13-8, 7-2) women’s basketball team saw their seven game win streak come to an end on Jan. 25 with a 70-53 loss to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (9-9, 5-4) on the road.

Troy never led in the game and trailed 31-18 at halftime and 52-32 going into the final period. The 53 points was the second lowest point total of the season for Troy and just the third time the Trojans have scored under 60 in a game this season. Troy shot just 30.5 percent from the field, while Louisiana shot 38.1 percent. The Trojans also turned the ball over a staggering 26 times, which led to 24 points for the Cajuns. Despite Troy out-rebounding Louisiana 48-35, the Cajuns outscored Troy 12-10 in second chance points and 32-24 in the paint.

“It was a very disappointing night here in the ‘Cajundome.’ We had a rough night,” Troy Coach Chanda Rigby said. “We weren’t shooting the ball well and turned the ball over 26 times. It’s hard enough to win with that at home, let alone on the road. We didn’t get the job done and we’re disappointed.

“We wanted the win streak to extend, but we must learn from these mistakes and do better next time. This team we faced tonight is not a three-point shooting team, and in the fourth, we had to force the pressure. This team didn’t give up, and we battled back, so I’m proud of that. Zay (Dyer) has bought into the insurance plan of rebounding, and she knows that when the chips are down, we have to rebound. So, I’m proud of her for that. Next up, we have Arkansas State and a challenge coming up. We have to fight and claw back to get tied back up in second place.”

Brianna Jackson led Troy with 13 points and five rebounds, while Zay Dyer tallied 11 points, 19 rebounds and a block. Briana Peguero also earned 10 points and four rebounds. Ashlyn Jones led Louisiana with 20 points, six rebounds and two steals.

Troy is currently tied with Appalachian State for third place in the Sun Belt with still undefeated James Madison in first place and Arkansas State in second place. The Trojans will continue their four-game road stretch this Thursday, Jan. 30, at Arkansas State for a pivotal Sun Belt Conference clash.
