To the employees at Edge Regional Medical Center, Ethel King is more than a co-worker.
That’s why she received the most nominations for the honor of Employee of the Quarter.
Much to the surgical aide’s surprise, she was presented the honor Thursday afternoon more than 10 years after she began working for the hospital.
It was caring for her mother that made her choose to become a nursing aide and went to work for the local hospital in January 1990.
"I try to do my best for everybody," King said after receiving the honor and plenty of hugs from fellow hospital employees.
She said receiving the recognition makes her "proud."
But, she was humble about the honor because she enjoys working in the surgery department and just wants "to see they’re (patients) are taken care of" while they recover.
The Employee of the Quarter is chosen by hospital employees based on certain criteria, such as dedication to the community and hospital and willingness to help. Nominations also have to be substantiated. This is the second year the honor has been given to employees. One of the four nominated will be honored as Employee of the Year.
"We’re involved in the community and we want to recognize our employees for the service they provide here and to the community," said Sharon Mikell, human resources director.
And, in return for that service, the Employee of the Quarter is given $100, a parking space, plaque and gets their meals for 25 cents during the three months of holding the honor.
