Despite the rain and cold weather, the turnout was strong Saturday for Troy Pike Habitat for Humanity’s Christmas cookie and bake sale fundraiser at St. Martin Catholic Church.

“The Catholic Church has been really gracious to let us be here,” said Executive Director Fred Johnson. “It’s just been an outpouring of love in all this rain and cold weather. “

Not only was the turnout strong, but the fundraiser was also a success in terms of money raised.

“We’ve made around $2,500 already today, and there will be some more money coming in Monday and Tuesday,” Johnson said. “We’ve had the greatest bunch of people come out and donate. Wal-Mart Distribution Center 7019, their employees not only donated items, but they came in and bought stuff. “

The need for events like the fundraiser come from Habitat’s never-ending need for not only money, but volunteers as well.

“We need folks to be involved at all levels, even if that’s just being a mentor to a family,” Johnson said. “We have a need for land and we’re looking into doing a planned giving program, where when you pass on, you can leave things to Habitat.”

Still, money and materials are always needed.

“We always need cash money, and what we call gifts in kind, such as lumber or sheet rock,” Johnson said.” Anything is a help. We need labor, and all you have to do is be able to follow instructions.””
