Fund-raising for Relay not over, yet

Pike County’s 2012 Relay for Life concluded Friday, but the City of Troy is hoping area residents haven’t lost their generous spirits when it comes to the cause.
The city is hosting a silent auction until Friday that brings together a collection of donated items. The auction is open to everyone and proceeds will go to benefit Relay for Life.
“We’ve had a lot of support from local businesses and we’ve got a good and varied selection of items,” said Ashley Smallwood, coordinator of special projects for Troy. “We usually have a big turnout and we hope that we can bring in more people this year.”
The silent auction includes items such as baseballs signed by Roger Clements and other players, footballs signed by Troy Trojans Head Coach Larry Blakeney and former Arkansas Razorbacks Head Coach Bobby Petrino and golf packages for both Troy and Brundidge.
There’s also artwork by local artists Derek Rogers and George Elliot, a 14-karat gold and diamond cross necklace from Marquirette’s Jewelry in Montgomery and several gift baskets.
A date night-themed basket holds a bottle of sparkling grape juice, two wine glasses, a candle, a night at the Marriot Hotel, four movie tickets to Continental Cinemas in Troy and dinner at Momma Goldberg’s.
“My favorite is the Mother’s Day basket,” Smallwood said. “Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend and the basket has got a lot of stuff in it that would be great for a gift if you don’t know what to get for her.”
The Mother’s Day basket includes a ceramic key holder, lotion, an Anytime Fitness package, a Domino’s Pizza and a $100 gift certificate to Marquirette’s.
Organizers didn’t leave Dad out, either. In addition to the auction, the city is holding a raffle for a medium sized Big Green Egg Grill from Terracotta valued at $1000.
The grill will be raffled off on June 12, in time for Father’s Day, and tickets are $5 each with all proceeds going to Relay.
The items for the silent auction are open for viewing and bidding at Troy City Hall until 3:30 Friday afternoon and tickets for the Big Green Egg grill can be purchased at the recreation department, city hall or the library.
