The Hartselle Lady Tigers (48-11) made it a clean sweep by HHS in both the baseball and softball Class 5A State Championships.
They matched their counterparts on the baseball diamond by defeating No. 1 ranked Mortimer Jordan in Montgomery over the weekend in a 3-2 championship game that lasted 13 innings.
It was Anna Corum who notched a base hit with two outs and the bases loaded to claim the title as they needed the assistance of sophomore Lindsey McClannahan through the final five innings, coming in as relief on the mound for Hartselle to get the win.
Hartselle, who put Charles Henderson out of the State Tournament last year, but didn’t get the chance to match up with the Lady Trojans this year, went undefeated throughout the weekend. They were the only team to even score on Mortimer Jordan who had five shutouts in the playoffs including Sub-State.
Hartselle defeated Scottsboro 12-2, 15-0 in their Sub-State match, then powered through the bracket with a 7-0 win over Escambia County and an 11-1 win over Walker. They then sent Mortimer Jordan to the loser’s bracket with a close 2-1 win that sealed their spot in the Championship game.
Mortimer Jordan had to defeat Walker 8-0 before getting the chance to take on Hartselle again, but no second game was necessary after the 13-inning marathon game.
Katie Tillman of Hartselle was named MVP of the tournament with three other Lady Tigers making the All-State fast-pitch team.
