The Sub-State series between Charles Henderson High School and Citronelle started and ended the same way – with three straight strike outs.

Since not one CHHS player struck out on the day, it was all good news for the Lady Trojans.

Senior pitcher Betsy White began the Sub-State matchup in the zone, striking out the first eight Citronelle batters en route to a perfect 15-0 game. in the opener.

As an encore, the team managed to punch their ticket to Montgomery and the State Championship with an 8-1 win in the second game.

White baffled Citronelle from the mound as well as at the plate in the first game. The senior was unstoppable going 4-for-4 on the day with a solo shot in the first to get things going that just happened to land on the windshield of a parked car in the parking lot.

After White’s solo shot, the Lady Trojans added another run in the first then scored six in the second, two in the third and finished things off with five runs, all with two outs, in the fourth.

Citronelle found some answers in the second game as they were able to hold the Lady Trojans to only one run in the first three innings and tie the score with their only run of the day on a CHHS error in the bottom of the third.

The run only seemed to anger the Charles Henderson bats, however, as they blew up in the top of the fourth to the tune of three-straight singles and a double by Elizabeth Roundtree to start the inning, then, finished it with a single by Emily Christian and a pair of doubles by both Kelly Miller and White to notch five runs in the inning.

The Lady Trojans were only able to put up two more runs in the fifth, but 10 different batters got hits for CHHS as they powered out 14 hits in the first game and 11 in the first.

In the second game, Nicki Wingard, Amanda Pruitt, Ashley Faust and Miller all finished with a double and a single. adding to her 4-for-4 showing in the first game, White had a double going 1-for-2.

Now the Charles Henderson Softball team will travel to Montgomery to join eight other 5A teams in the 2000 Class 5A State Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.

The Lady Trojans will be playing the winner of the Walker, Buckhorn series in round one. The game will be game two of the tournament and is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on Friday.
